Learning outcomesAfter successful completion of this unit, students will be able to: 1. Explain and analyse legislative process and the types, structure and components of legislation;
2. Use appropriate legal research techniques to locate a legislative provision relevant to solve a legal problem;
3. Apply general principles of statutory interpretation to solving legal problems;
4. Identify, interpret and apply various aids to statutory interpretation; and
5. Solve an interpretive problem and use critical analysis, evaluation and written communication skills to give a reasoned opinion as to the appropriate meaning of a legislative provision.

PrerequisitesThis unit is only available to students in a Bachelor of Laws course.
Students must have passed 36 credit points of study including 11251 Foundations of Law and Justice.

Submission of assessment items
Special assessment requirements
Final grades in this subject will be assessed according to performance in each of the assessment items identified above. In order to pass this unit, you must obtain:
- an overall total score of at least 50% AND
- submit all assessment items marked as mandatory
For assessment items marked as mandatory, each piece of assessment must be completed and submitted, but it is not necessary that students pass each individual item of assessment.

Use of Text-Matching Software
The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.
This unit is run using discussion based pedagogy. There is also a presentation requirement for assessment.
