This unit provides an introduction to the theory and practice of educational evaluation and evaluative research. Students will critically explore how historical, geographical, political and social contexts can influence the role of evaluators as well as the design, purpose and consequences of evaluations. Through exposure to theoretical texts and case studies, students will develop the skills to compare, contrast and apply key approaches to evaluating education systems and programs.
1. Demonstrate understanding of the evolution, purpose and consequences of evaluation;
2. Demonstrate understanding of the paradigmatic underpinnings of different approaches to educational evaluation;
3. Critically appraise published and peer-reviewed evaluation studies; and
4. Select appropriate evaluation models and justify their application to education programs or systems.
