There is no requirement to obtain a particular textbook for this unit. However, there will be required readings posted on Canvas each week. These will be made freely available or accessible through the library.
Submission of assessment items
Special assessment requirements
The final mark for this subject will be calculated by an accumulation of marks from each assessment item. To achieve a passing grade or higher, students must:
- attend at least 80% of workshops (either in person or in real-time if attending virtually); and
- attempt all assessment items; and
- achieve a final aggregate mark of 50% or higher.
The unit convenor reserves the right to question students on any of their submitted work for moderation and academic integrity purposes, which may result in an adjustment to the marks awarded for a specific task.
Academic integrity

Good scholarship involves building on the work of others and use of others' work must be acknowledged with proper attribution made. To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.
Use of Text-Matching Software
The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.
Learner engagement
The contact hours for each student in this unit consist of 48 hours of workshops (2 hours x 2 workshop/week x 12 weeks). There are two weekly workshops with attendance at both compulsory.
It is expected that students will spend ~3 hours each week on self-directed study of the specified learning materials in preparation for class (~36 hours).
The remaining 66 hours of workload is allocated to working on assessment tasks.
Participation requirements
Participation in workshops is a compulsory condition of this unit, and attendance will be recorded. In order to pass this unit students must participate in at least 80% of the 12 weeks of workshops, either in person or on-line via virtual room. Students who cannot attend in person will need to have approval from the unit convenor to attend virtually. In the event that you cannot attend a workshop due to illness or unavoidable commitments, contact the Unit Convener as soon as possible. Students must provide a medical or counsellors certificate or other relevant supporting documentation if they are absent.
Required IT skills
Use of standard word processing software, use of the Canvas interface, and access to University of Canberra email are requirements of this unit.
This unit involves online meetings in real time using the Virtual Room in your UCLearn teaching site. The Virtual Room allows you to communicate in real time with your lecturer and other students. To participate verbally, rather than just typing, you will need a microphone. For best audio quality we recommend a microphone and speaker headset. For more information and to test your computer, go to the Virtual Room in your UCLearn site and 'Join Course Room'. This will trigger a tutorial to help familiarise you with the functionality of the virtual room.

Additional information
Provision of information to the group
Notifications through the Canvas Announcements Forum or the Canvas Discussion Forums are deemed to be made to the whole class. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they check for announcements on the unit's Canvas website. Students should ensure they check their student email regularly. The Canvas discussion forums will be checked by staff regularly.
Use of student email account
The Univesity email policy states that "students wishing to contact the University via email regarding administrative or academic matters need to send the email from the University account for identity verification purposes". Therefore all unit enquiries should be emailed using a student university email account. Students should contact servicedesk@canberra.edu.au if they have any issues accessing their university email account.
Absence from class
In all cases of absence, sickness or personal problems that compromise the student's ability to participate in class or complete assignments, it is the student's responsibility to ensure that the Unit Convener is informed.
Change in unit delivery
Unforeseen circumstances beyond the unit convener's control could result in changes to the mode of delivery of workshops and assessments. Students will be advised if this occurs and appropriate alternatives will be arranged.
