Research Festival
The University of Canberra Research Festival is an exciting conference-style event that showcases the diversity of UC research, including HDR research. It brings together the UC research community with industry partners by hosting a series of presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities.
Three Minute Thesis
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is an academic research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland (UQ).
University of Canberra Three Minute Thesis heats are held mid-year across the University’s five faculties. Finalists progress to the UC 3MT Final where they present their pitch to a judging panel in front of a live audience.
Competitors aim to convince the judges and audience of their research significance in no more than three minutes, for a chance to win the $4,000 first place prize, $2,000 for the runner up, and $1,000 people’s choice prize.
Orientation
Orientation activities occur at the beginning of each semester. All HDR students are invited. If you would like the opportunity to revisit any of the seminars, presentations, or events please register.
Writing Events
Shut up and write
In-Person
Turn your dissertation writing and editing from a solo chore to a social experience! Join your fellow HDR candidates every Thursday for a morning of progress with your research project while connecting with research colleagues. Using the Pomodoro Method, we work in four 25-minute blocks, with 10-minute breaks in between for discussion. For best results come with writing or analysis goals and share them with your fellow writers. We buy the beverages so you can focus on the writing!

Online
Do you want to be social with your writing but can’t attend the Thursday morning Shut Up and Write group on campus? HDR Development host two online writing sessions each week in the Shut Up and Write channel of the Academic Writers’ Group Teams drive.
If you are not already a member of the Academic Writers’ Group Teams channel and follow the instructions to join.
These sessions are candidate-led.

Writing Intensives
HDR Development Writing Intensives are held three times per year, over two full days. They are the perfect opportunity for you to immerse yourself in your writing in a supportive and focussed environment.
HDR Development will encourage you to set a clear, measurable, and achievable goal at the start of each day and share progress at lunchtime and at the end of the day.

Lunch on the Lawn
Would you like the opportunity to meet other HDR candidates without the pressures of a workshop or conference setting?
Lunch on the Lawn is your opportunity to get to know your colleagues from across the HDR community in a relaxed, social setting. Pizza and drinks are provided.
