This minor is designed to allow broader student access to an education in molecular biology and genetics. Such a minor will allow, for example, students from Resource and Environmental Sciences, where academic staff have established a research strength in molecular ecology, the opportunity to study molecular biology/genetics in combination with environment subjects. This will be immensely useful particularly to those students interested in Honours or post-graduate studies in Wildlife Genetics. The provision of this minor will therefore help meld together the undergraduate ecology with disciplines traditionally only available to students in human health and medical science programmes. With issues concerning the use of molecular biology and modern genetics in health and society so prominent in the media and as an ongoing debate (eg. Stem cell technology), this minor will also help produce graduates from across the university who are equipped to intimately understand the issues being discussed and engage them in an informed manner.
