This Major provides an understanding of the intrinsic and complex relationships between the varied layers of political decision making and the communication involved. It introduces students to the historical links between democracy and public communication and to the concept and practice of public opinion. It investigates domestic communication of politics to, from and within Parliament House Canberra, including the Canberra Press Gallery, bureaucracy, political advertising, election campaigning and lobbying. It considers international political communication such as foreign and war reporting, diplomacy and the communicative role of NGOs, and key institutions such as the United Nations. We examine political and communication theory and the influence of image, citizenship and media on national political culture and international relationships. We explore the vital challenge of technology to political communication.
