This major addresses the physiological and nutritional foundations for understanding the nature of food and the physiological and epidemiological relationships between food, nutrients and components of food and common diet-related diseases prevalent in Australia. Social, cultural and environmental factors influencing the food supply and food access in developed and to a lesser extent in developing countries are also considered. This major is highly recommended for students seeking an in-depth understanding of food and diet-related health issues involved in the prevention of disease and improvement in health outcomes and intending to work in allied or community health, in teaching or with sports people or seeking further graduate studies in nutrition, dietetics or public health.
Students choosing to undertake the 24 credit point major must be enrolled in the Human Nutrition degree course or have permission from the convener of the major.
