The University of Canberra appreciates the often-conflicting commitments of students at the elite athlete level who are also trying to complete a degree.

UC currently supports 144 registered athletes under the Elite Athlete Program, which includes flexibility for assessment deadlines and attendance, based on sporting commitments. It also includes flexibility in the timing and location of attendance at work placements. Elite athletes also have a dedicated support officer who assist in tailoring their workload to their sporting commitments.

In 2019, ten UC students were awarded scholarships worth $10,000 each from the Eldon and Anne Foote charitable trust. This Trust was established in honour of late philanthropist and businessman Eldon Foote who was passionate about sport and has left a legacy that supports so many young promising athletes.

The scholarships were provided to assist the students in balancing their athletic career, education and financial commitments – which can be extremely difficult to manage and maintain without assistance.

Storm Sanders was one recipient and will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, she also spends an average of 35 to 40 weeks on the road each year in the pursuit of success on the tennis circuit.

Ms Sanders said UC’s flexibility allowed her to study while on the tennis circuit, “I wouldn’t have been able to complete this course without the University’s support. The flexibility has enabled me to keep going with both my tennis and my studies.”
