Should I become a teacher? What your teaching area says about you.
By Laura Tough
There’s a reason people say teaching isn’t just a job, it’s part of who you are. Teaching is the way you think, the way you explain things and the way you care about the students in your classroom. Often, the teaching area you’re drawn to says a lot about what lights you up and where your passion truly lies.
If you’ve ever found yourself asking, "should I become a teacher" or "is teaching right for me," this article is a light-hearted way to explore where you might feel most at home in the classroom.
Your subject area
Creative Arts
You see possibility everywhere.
You are the kind of person that notices colour, texture and story in places others walk straight past. You believe creativity is not just a nice-to-have, but it is essential. You are passionate, patient, expressive and deeply aware that confidence can grow through creativity.
You likely thrive in organised chaos, valuing flexibility, spontaneity and the power of letting students make a mess.
As a creative arts teacher, you nurture a non-judgemental space where your students know that self-expression is important and that no matter how small, their ideas deserve space.
Health and Physical Education
You are energy, encouragement and resilience in human form.
You care about the whole student—their mind, body and most importantly, their confidence. You are their number one supporter, cheering from the sidelines and quietly noticing those students who need a little extra boost.
Some might describe you as a child at heart, particularly when you turn lunchtime social sport into joyful chaos, but deep down you understand that movement helps learning and that understanding wellbeing is foundational, not optional. You are calm under pressure, good at reading people and great at turning small wins into momentum.
As a health and physical education teacher, you help create lifelong habits, not just lesson plans.
STEM
You love curiosity, logic and the thrill of figuring things out.
You are the kind of teacher who loves a good question, even more than finding the right answer. You like problem solving, seeing patterns and helping students find connections between ideas.
In the classroom we’ll find you breaking down complex concepts into simple, bite-size pieces and being genuinely excited when a student finally has that lightbulb ‘aha!’ moment.
The STEM teacher shows students how to think, not just what to remember.
So what kind of teacher will you be?
If you’re still wondering what kind of teacher you want to be or even asking yourself "should I become a teacher?" the answer doesn’t have to be perfectly formed yet. For many people, it starts with a subject they love, a way of thinking that feels natural or a desire to make a difference.
