TESOL FAQs

If you're deciding between Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters of TESOL and FLT, consider the depth of study you're seeking. Your choice should reflect your goals and how extensively you want to build your expertise in the field.

The Graduate Certificate provides you with the foundational skills and knowledge to begin your journey in language teaching. Across four units, you’ll explore key concepts in linguistics, grammar, and language teaching methodology, giving you the confidence to step into entry-level teaching roles.

This course is perfect if you want to upskill quickly, explore a passion for languages, or see if TESOL and FLT is the right path for you. You’ll also keep your future study options open, as completed units can be credited towards a Graduate Diploma or Master of TESOL and FLT.

The Graduate Diploma offers a more comprehensive study experience, building on the fundamentals of the Graduate Certificate. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of language pedagogy, assessment design, and advanced teaching practices while developing specialised skills for professional contexts.

This course is well-suited for those who want broader career opportunities in TESOL and FLT or plan to progress to the Master’s program. Your Graduate Diploma units can be credited towards the Master’s degree, helping you fast-track your studies.

The Master’s degree offers the most in-depth study of language teaching, designed for those who want to expand their expertise and professional practice. Over 2 years full-time, you’ll develop advanced skills in curriculum design and evaluation, explore diverse approaches to pedagogy, and deepen your knowledge of linguistics and intercultural communication.

This degree is ideal for those looking to pursue careers as TESOL or foreign language teachers in schools, universities and language centres, or in roles such as curriculum design, language assessment, education management and academic research.

UC's Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma in TESOL and FLT can be completed as Online Plus*, giving you the flexibility to balance study with other commitments.

The Master of TESOL and FLT is offered on-campus or in a blended format, providing opportunities for deeper engagement and professional development.

Our Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma are 100% online, meaning you can work at your own pace whilst still having the opportunity to network, interact and learn from your teachers and peers. The University of Canberra offers a wide range of online resources to support your study. These include virtual library access, academic and IT support, financial assistance and career guidance through Careers UC. You'll also have access to student welfare services, a virtual orientation and UC’s interactive online learning platform.
