What is the Aged Care Transition to Practice (ACTTP) Program?
The Aged Care Transition to Practice (ACTTP) program provides nurses with mentoring, training and support at the start of their career in aged care and is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.
What is the Gerontological Nursing Competencies (GNCs) program?
The GNCs was launched in 2018, and has been funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, ACTTP since 2020.
Fully funded places are available to new graduate RNs, RNs new to aged care, and newly practicing RNs educated outside of Australia.
The program guides RNs in aged care, improving their confidence, and competence and encouraging them to continue practice in aged care.
As of November 2025 the program had achieved:

Who is the GNCs program for?
- Registered nurses working in residential aged care who want to build upon their clinical and leadership skills in the aged care sector
- Aged care providers looking to upskill their nursing workforce
- Gerontological specialists looking to enhance their mentorship skills
What sets the GNCs program apart?
On completion of the evidence-based program, learners will have attained specialised gerontological nursing knowledge and skills required to work effectively with older people. As well as facilitation by gerontological researchers in the workshops and online, every learner is allocated an expert mentor from practice to provide support and guidance throughout the course.
They (mentees) feel more empowered. I think their self-confidence and their self-esteem really improved. The outcome is beneficial for the client as well.
