The aim of this course is to produce business professionals who are equipped to solve problems in a multi-disciplinary business environment. The worlds of commerce and accounting will be explored in the context of wider social, legal, economic and political environments. You’ll gain a solid base of understanding across commerce, which is essential in a wide range of careers, plus you’ll complete a series of carefully integrated units in financial accounting, management accounting, auditing and finance.
This flexible and versatile degree allows you to tailor the course to meet your own personal interests. You’ll graduate as an impressive accounting professional with a solid background in commerce, and will be qualified to undertake study programs with both the Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand and CPA Australia.
Study a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) at UC and you will:
- evaluate and synthesise the concepts and theories acquired in accounting
- exercise critical thinking skills when dealing with ambiguous and incomplete information

Work Integrated Learning
The Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) sees academics and industry working together to develop a range of diverse WIL opportunities for students, including internships, work placements, industry projects, competitions, exhibitions, study tours, virtual real-world learning experiences and more.
The faculty runs a three-week ‘pre-internship preparation program’ where students learn essential employment skills and interview techniques. The program culminates in a series of interviews hosted by Canberra-based accounting firms, with successful candidates going on to secure internships. Previous students have undertaken internships and cadetships with organisations including International IDEA, Legal Aid ACT, eChoice, Boyce Chartered Accountants, Maxim Chartered Accountants and Chartered Accountants ANZ (CAANZ).
The course concludes with a capstone project, which aims to integrate what you’ve learned throughout your degree and prepare you for the transition to either successful future employment or further studies.

Note:
- - From 2024, units 10158, 10236, 11166, 11167 and 11168 have been replaced with new BGL Internship units.
- 1. Students must pass a minimum of 1 unit from Part A. Two units may be chosen from Part A or one from Part A and one from Part B.
- 2. Students who undertook two units listed in the current Part B section prior to 2024 can still count the units towards their course. Students from 2024 need to select at least 1 unit from Part A.
- 3. Unit 11572 Accounting Internship Preparation is only available to students undertaking an Accounting major.
- Credit Points: Students who want to do more than 6 credit points from this list may count them towards Open Electives.
- International Exchange: Students may also choose to undertake units at an international institution, subject to approval by the Program Director.
- Please note that if a student wishes to complete the 24cp major, they must select two of the Level 3 offerings in the restricted choice options from the Core Major in Commerce and Accounting (CM0005).
- 1. Students undertaking the 24cp major are NOT eligible for CAANZ or CPA Australia accreditation, unless they are enrolled in and complete MGSC01 Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Laws.
- 2. Students in MGSC01 Bachelor of Commerce/ Bachelor of Laws must also complete unit 11293 Taxation Law.
- 3. Students seeking CAANZ and CPA Australia accreditation must complete the 33cp major.
- 4. Completion of the 39cp major will enable students to meet the educational requirements of the Tax Practitioners Board in addition to that of CPA and CAANZ.
