As one of the oldest schools in Australia, the Fort Street Archives and Museum exists to preserve the rich history and colourful stories of Fort Street teachers and students, at work and play for over 170 years. The Fort Street Archives contain an impressive range of remarkable historical items, artefacts of the school and personal donations given generously by former students, staff and families. Fort Street is one of the first public schools in NSW to be founded under the provisions of the National Education Board Act 1848. Established in 1849, Fort Street is one of the oldest public schools in Australia with a number of nationally significant alumni in Australia's history - including prime ministers, NSW premiers, artists, musicians and high court justices.
Fort Street Archives and Museum contains a great wealth of historical documents and artefacts, such as pupil exercise books from past decades, school year books, such as The Fortian and the Mercurius and a large collection of photographs, many of the older ones being of significant local historical and educational interest. The museum also contains examples of school uniforms, school badges, blazers and caps from different periods of the school’s existence. Of particular interest, the archives also contain staff and student records, which are most useful for family historians and local history enthusiasts. Among the many objects and artefacts are Honour Boards, school trophies and student achievement awards (Iain Wallace - Archivist)
