Race around campus starts off O-Week

Vanessa Lam

12 February 2015: To get to know the University of Canberra and have a bit of fun, students raced around campus on Wednesday as part of an 'amazing race' activity for Orientation Week.

The teams of students raced to follow clues to compete in a range of challenges around campus; including driving a mobility scooter, correctly referencing a book, registering an item in to lost and found and a physical challenge set by the Canberra Raiders.

Prizes included gift vouchers, Brumbies merchandise and UC Fit! gym memberships. Students Liliana Rivera, Anaisel Lopez and Isaac Banks were the winning team and won Westfield gift cards.

Organiser, Inclusion and Welfare manager Faith Maddalena, said the event was very successful and the students' feedback was extremely positive.

"It's good way to introduce students to the various support services on campus in a fun, active and social way," Ms Maddalena said. "The students said they loved taking part."

Pianos

Another feature of Orientation Week were pianos on show around campus, painted by art and design students from Shanghai Normal University as part of a joint project between the Faculty of Arts and Design and UC Music. The pianos, which were donated by University staff or members of the public, will remain on display around campus as public, interactive art.

More than 4,500 students have been welcomed at the University for Orientation Week during 9-13 February, which is a week designed to help students get settled into university life and ready for study. Students have been able to attend course advice sessions, get help with enrolling and go on campus tours. There was also a UC Life! market day on Wednesday, which included stalls and performances by the University's clubs and societies.

Students were formally welcomed to the University by Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Parker at the Commencement Ceremony today, while environmental science graduate Kirsty Cleburne delivered the Commencement Address.

Orientation Week continues until Friday 13 February, for more information visit our website. Classes start on Monday 16 February.
