4 December 2014: Sports scientists, sports managers, performance analysts and coaches will be able to hone their skills and further develop their expertise thanks to the University of Canberra's new Master of High Performance Sport.

Commencing in Semester One 2015, the new course will provide students with the skills and insight to develop their careers while having direct access to world-leading sport professionals as well as elite sports teams.

"Behind every elite athlete and sports team are professionals with the knowledge and experience to enable champions to reach their maximum potential," associate professor in sports biomechanics and head of the department of sport and exercise science, Nick Ball, said.

"With industry-based professionals heavily involved in the process of teaching and learning about high performance sport, this new course provides the practical approach that elite sport requires."

Those who enrol in the course will be able to choose between three specialised streams: sports management and leadership, performance science and analytics or a generic high performance sport major, to develop their careers in their chosen field.

"The course will bring together the mindsets and experience of coaches, managers and high performance practitioners to equip participants with the tools needed to advance their own careers and those of the athletes they advise and support," Dr Ball said.

University of Canberra Capitals coach Carrie Graf, Australian Institute of Sport's senior physiologists and University of Canberra adjunct professors David Martin and David Pyne, and University of Canberra athlete in residence Melissa Breen were on hand to help kick off the course at a launch on 26 November.
