Craig Mutton joins UC as its first-ever Chief Digital Officer

24 March 2022: The University of Canberra is pleased to welcome Craig Mutton to the University, as its first Chief Digital Officer.

Mr Mutton will join the University at the end of March, bringing a wealth of expertise in digital transformation and strategic planning.

He joins the University from the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria, where, as Executive Director Strategy & Transformation, he oversaw a $240 million once-in-a-generation organisational transformation incorporating people and culture, digital transformation, and regulatory reform – resulting in improved customer experience, stakeholder engagement, and ultimately, environment protection outcomes.

The newly-established Chief Digital Officer role will see Mr Mutton head the Digital Portfolio at the University – championing digital and innovation capability uplift, technology and engineering delivery and ultimately placing the student digital experience at the heart of what he does.

“UC’s deeply ambitious nature – a young university that punches above its weight – coupled with a collegial, inclusive and respectful leadership and culture drew me to this role,” he said.

“Through my new role, I look forward to helping to create a truly personalised digital university – that utilises technology to its fullest potential, prioritises human-centred design and is at the digital forefront, not only in adopting but in using technology and data to rethink how we operate, how we deliver value, and how we strengthen our culture.”

For Mr Mutton, who has a philosophy of “people and culture first” in his approach to digital leadership and transformation, it is not just a technology role – but also a cultural and organisational change role.

“To me, technology is an important catalyst, but large-scale change and transformation only occurs when people and culture remain the focal points – which very much aligns with UC’s values, and I look forward to further realising these values.”
