Boundary busting GLAMR conversations to drive the sector into the future

11 October 2018: The GLAMR (galleries, libraries, archives, museums and records) and heritage sector will be exploring critical issues currently facing the sector at the inaugural Creative and Cultural Futures: Leadership and Change symposium to be held on Friday, 12 October.

The symposium, hosted by the University of Canberra’s Faculty of Arts and Design, hopes to initiate conversations about drivers of change and the skills needed to build leadership for continued relevance of the GLAMR sector in a constantly evolving society.

“The sector is uniquely different to the corporate environment in that GLAMR professionals can be leaders at any stage of their careers,” said Dr Tracy Ireland Associate Professor of Cultural Heritage and Convenor of the Master of Arts in Creative and Cultural Futures.

“Those in the cultural sector are not used to thinking of it as a ‘sector’ as most seem to consider their careers in isolation, forgetting that the sector, as a whole, is a driver of economic development and integral to community wellbeing.

“The challenges facing the industry are numerous, from the impact of new technology to changes in funding models, making it crucial for industry professionals and aspiring students to foster flexibility, confidence and resilience,” Dr Ireland said.

The symposium’s program boasts a lineup of leading sector professionals such as Alex Marsden of Museums and Galleries Australia; Shane Breynard of Canberra Museum and Art Gallery; and Rachael Coghlan of Craft ACT who will share their views and experiences in their respective spheres of influence.

“It is time for the sector to rethink its role in today’s fast-paced society and to remain relevant and current in an ever-changing world,” concluded Dr Ireland.
