Biography

Katy is an experienced early childhood teacher, who has worked in early childhood settings in the Preschool and Primary context across the ACT for well over a decade. Katy's career has been fundamentally driven by a commitment to learning and teaching. She thrives on mentoring and supporting early career teachers, offering guidance and practical advice to help them navigate the complexities of the classroom and flourish in their roles. Katy views this as an essential aspect of her own professional journey. She considers herself a lifelong learner and is currently studying for her own Ph.D. on teachers' conceptualizations of play.

Katy is a passionate advocate for children's rights to play, recognizing it not only as a fundamental aspect of childhood but also as a crucial component of their holistic development. She actively promotes the importance of play in various educational settings and advocates for policies and practices that prioritize and safeguard children's right to play. Through her advocacy efforts, she aims to create environments where children are encouraged to explore, experiment, and learn through play, fostering a lifelong love for learning.

At the University of Canberra, Katy is employed as a doctoral lecturer in the Faculty of Education. She teaches predominantly in the Early Childhood and Primary Education degrees. Katy’s academic interests include all things play and playful learning. She is interested in different approaches and philosophies to early childhood education from an international perspective.
