Claudia Doman

Leading business executive Joanne Metcalfe has been appointed to the University of Canberra Council by ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr.

He has also reappointed disability advocate Sue Salthouse and education champion Tom Karmel for a second three-year term.

Ms Metcalfe, who has vast experience in professional services management related to business, planning and construction, is the ACT and Southern NSW Operating Centre Manager for leading consulting services firm GHD. Her term on the University Council will be three years.

"This is an exciting time to come on board with the University of Canberra," Ms Metcalfe, a 2009 Telstra ACT Business Women's Awards recipient, said.

"Not only am I passionate about the tertiary education sector but I think the University of Canberra is poised for great things, including breaking into the world rankings, increasing its student numbers and continuing to attract high calibre staff.

"The University of Canberra has a great strategic plan and a team who has strong implementation capabilities. Not every university could say that. So, I am looking forward to adding value and helping with what is already a rich set of growth ideas."

Sue Salthouse is the current Canberra Citizen of the Year and has held leading roles withWomen with Disabilities ACT and Women With Disabilities Australia, as well as the ACT Disability Expert Panel.

Ms Salthouse said she was delighted to be reappointed to the University's Council.

"The University of Canberra's Breakthrough strategy marks us as one of Australia's most future focused institutions. Its strong stand on the prevention of violence against women through support of Canberra organisations, and its White Ribbon workplace accreditation, is helping to make a difference in the ACT," she said.

Dr Tom Karmel is the former managing director of the National Centre for Vocational Education Research and has previously held senior Federal Government positions in areas including education, employment and labour market research. He is also an adjunct professor at the National Institute of Labour Studies at Flinders University.

"I'm very pleased to be reappointed to the University's Council," Dr Karmel said. "Seeing the university grow in both student numbers and research performance, extend its reach interstate in collaboration with a number of TAFE Institutes and cement its reputation as the sports university has been a rewarding experience."

"I look forward to continuing my role as a Council member - at a very challenging time given the financial uncertainty of the tertiary sector and a difficult labour market for graduates," he said.

Ms Metcalfe, Ms Salthouse and Mr Karmel join Chris Faulks, Barry Mewett, Prue Power, Sarah Ryan and Dennis Trewin as Council members appointed by the Chief Minister.

Council is the University of Canberra's governing body, responsible for the management of the University, as well as developing its strategic direction, appointing the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor and approving its annual budget.
