This flagship unit provides the student with an opportunity to produce a major project in an area of interest related to the study of sport. Students will be involved in a project in either coaching, sports science, management or media fields. The project will take the form of a discipline specific research study.

Learning outcomes

students will be able to develop a research design, collect, analyse, interpret the data and communicate the findings in one of the fields listed above and experience and evaluate an active role in an appropriate professional organisation.

Required texts

There are no prescribed text books for these units, however students should familiarise themselves with relevant journal articles and texts on their specific area of research interest.
There are a range of text books on guidelines for preparing, analysing and writing your researchproject. Choose one that suits your needs and can assist you through the research process. Two good examples are:
 
Baumgartner TA & Hensley LD. (2006). Conducting and Reading Research in Health and HumanPerformance, 4th edition, New York, McGraw Hill.
 
Gratton, C & Jone, I, 2010, Research Methods for Sports Studies, 2nd Edition, Routledge, UK

All assessment items should be submitted online via the unit Moodle site where possible.  

If you experience any problems please submit via email with a clear message outlining what the assessment item is and your name and student number

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Participation requirements

It is expected that all students will actively engage in all presentations and workshops

All students must complete a field based internship with an approved sport organisation or club where they will observe, assist or work with industry professionals

In-unit costs

Students will be responsible for any costs incurred during their internship and for the production of the poster/ video.

Work placement, internships or practicums

All students are required to undergo a Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) background check to undertake a placement for this unit.   Students are responsible for arranging their own checks through the ACT Office of Regulatory Services. 

Note that the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act only applies to the ACT. For students undertaking placements in other states or territories, it may be that a Police Check or a Working with Children Check is required 

This unit involves professional practicum / internships and therefore, additional student responsibilities are required in addition to those described in this section. Work-place learning requires strict adherence to professional practice principles and ethics. Client/patient confidentiality must always be maintained (see policy ****), including for assessment items such as reports or essays. The professional nature of this unit also requires 100% participation at all learning activities (lectures, practicals etc. if scheduled – see section 3) for the successful completion of this unit (also see section 6c). If attendance requirements cannot be satisfied (e.g. timetable clash), it is recommended that you meet with your Course Convener to schedule this unit for a future semester.
