Events and tourism are typically touted for the benefits they bring to destinations and host communities, such as social, economic, and environmental. However, often there it is still rare for evaluation or research to be conducted that supports these claims and from which organisations, hosts and destinations can learn. This unit explores current event and tourism evaluation theories and practices to develop knowledge and skills to conduct evaluations of impacts and legacies. These will be of interest and benefit to the event and tourism industries that can then support event development and a destination's competitiveness, for the benefit of residents, visitors, and organisations alike.
1. Identify the role and key stakeholders in researching and evaluating event and tourism impacts and legacies;
2. Reflect upon current event and tourism impacts and legacy practices;
3. Develop and apply a toolkit for conducting event and tourism impact and legacies evaluation; and
4. Create a context-specific strategy for knowledge management and knowledge transfer of event evaluation results.
