The aim of this unit is to help students develop a critical understanding of the complex interplay of creative work with innovation in media technologies and the co-evolution of audience and business opportunities. Through an understanding of this interplay students will learn how to explore and develop the creative and business potentials of the dynamic media in which they work. Students will explore a series of case studies of technological innovations and the creative and business opportunities they afforded artists who engaged with them. Examples of such innovations include the evolution of the piano and its impact on composition and performance in the 19th century, the development of new paper manufacturing technologies and their consequences for writers and publishers in the same period and, in a still emerging example, the concept of the metaverse and its implications for contemporary artists, musicians, writers and screen content creators.
