Skills development
Small business is not small: it creates the most jobs and advances innovation in both developed and developing economies. In this unit, we co-develop you into entrepreneurs, managers, and innovators of small business. We introduce the fundamentals of small business management in both traditional and new sectors, as well as analyse and apply the best practices of them in local, national, and international contexts. Further, we explore, stimulate, and incubate new small business thinking and ideas that are visionary and futuristic. We employ experiential and authentic teaching, learning, and engaging approaches to grow a new generation of business leaders. More importantly, we uncover and inspire the qualities and capabilities in you that will enable your success and resilience in a globalised business environment of increasing competition, disruption, and change.
Skills Development
As students of the University of Canberra, you will develop your critical thinking skills, your ability to solve complex problems, your ability to work with others, your confidence to learn independently, your written communication skills, your spoken communication skills and a number of work-related knowledge and skills.

Learner engagement
This course is a 100% online self-paced programme with set assessment deliverable dates as per the Canvas site. There are no on-campus lectures or tutorials. All lectures, video, podcast and reading resources are provided in the Canvas modules.
This unit is designed for independent online study. Students study the written and audio-visual materials individually at a time and location of their own choice with set individual assessment items submitted throughout the unit.
The assessment is split between a case study that is developed progressively as you work through the learning materials and the final report (Business Plan). The case study forms part of both the learning and the assessment of the unit and it is an important way of ensuring that the learning material is 'bedded down' in your mind.
This style of learning is designed specifically for students who are unable to attend campus-based classes due to other commitments. It may not be suitable for students who require a more interactive learning style and such students are encouraged to consider a campus-based unit instead.
As students work through the material at varying rates there are no set activities such as forum postings required however students are encouraged to utilise the forums to post questions to other students or discuss topics as required.
