This unit is designed to promote the exploration of traditional and contemporary use of melody, harmony and rhythm to intentionally manipulate emotions. The student examines historical and cultural associations between mood and music, both Western and Eastern and applies aural recognition of scales, chords, tempi, pitch range, dynamics, intervals, durations and timbre, again, with a specific focus on the emotional impact and communicative power of these elements. The unit is both systematic and exploratory in nature, introducing standard conventions of melody writing while promoting originality and innovation.
1. Compose and notate melodies using the elements of musical expression;
2. Construct contrapuntal and block harmony to create musical textures;
3. Apply written communication skills in creative and/or academic contexts; and
4. Identify aurally contemporary chords and chord progressions.

Headphones, notebooks, manuscript and pacer-style pencil (2B lead) and eraser are recommended for this unit.
