Full Description:

The intrigue of a good murder mystery is something that I’ve always strived to be able to write and I was given this chance earlier in the year for an assessment. As our year had been studying crime fiction, specifically Cosy School Narrative style, we were given the task of writing either a short narrative or the first chapter of a murder mystery. I took the second option and wrote the first chapter of a story I titled ‘A Lesson on Life and Death’. I utilised stereotypes from the cosy school narrative style and aimed to create an intriguing first chapter that establishes the detective, sees the murder, and introduces suspects. In more recent years, I’ve fallen in love with the beauty of a good murder mystery and so I’ve seen a lot of shows, movies and read a few murder mystery books. This then allowed me to write with confidence in understanding what makes and what breaks a good murder mystery. Additionally, I pre-planned who the killer would’ve been and how they murdered the victim to ensure that my story is plausible and well-established. If I had continued writing, it would be discovered that the assistant Jack had laced her lipstick with poison and so when she licked her lips, she ingested the poison. Although it seems that Eleanor died after drinking from the water bottle, this would turn out to be a red herring which would be what keeps the detective stumped as he tries to figure out how the killer murdered the victim.
