ABSTRACT

Over the past decade, the United States has witnessed renewed interest in the use of classroomobservation instruments to measure the quality of classroom teaching in research and practice. This presentation will review some basic findings from several studies of classroom teaching the presenter conducted over this time period, which taken together, involved the use of 7 classroom observation instruments frequently used in research and practice to measure the quality of classroom instruction. Using data from these studies, the presenter will discuss what dimensions of classroom instruction are measured on these different observation instruments, the convergent, divergent, and criterion validity of the instruments, the sources of measurement error associated with use of these instruments, and the implications of findings on validity and reliability for the use of these classroom observation instruments in the kinds of high stakes teacher evaluation regimes that have emerged in the United States over the past several years.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Brian Rowan is the Burke A. Hinsdale Collegiate Professor in Education, a Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research, and a Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan. A sociologist by training (PhD, Stanford University), Rowan's scholarly interests lie at the intersection of organisation theory and school effectiveness research. Over the years, he has written about schooling as an institution, the organisation and management of instruction in schools, the nature of teachers' and school leaders' work, and how schooling affects students' academic achievement. Rowan's recent research has involved empirical work on the measurement of teaching and several quasi-experimental and experimental studies of instructional intervention programs in both elementary and secondary school settings.
