Learn from Urban Planner and author of ‘Crafting Innovative Places for Australia’s Knowledge Economy’, Richard Hu, on how government and the private sector can work together to co-create the next generation of innovative places. Establish strategic techniques, explore international best-practice and develop the tools you need to take a leadership role when crafting new and unique communities and centres.

COURSE CONTENT

The Australian Government released Statement of Principles for Australian Innovation Precincts in October 2018 to pursue ‘place-based innovation’ and to encourage ‘bottom-up leadership’ to drive precinct development. This Master Class is timely to develop best practice leadership, strategy and place making into an art of ‘crafting Australian innovation precinct’.

The learning outcomes for this course are:

  • To have a comprehensive understanding of international best practices of innovation precincts;
  • To have an in-depth understanding of Australian leading innovation precincts, and how they perform in an international comparative context;
  • To develop a suite of ‘crafting’ approaches and tools in terms of leadership, strategy, and place making for Australian innovation precincts.

EVIDENCE-BASED POLICY MAKING - METHODS THAT MATTER

Do you want the opportunity to expand the range and variety of methods you can use to gather and analyse evidence for policy making? Join the Professor of Politics and Governance at the University of Southampton, Gerry Stoker to explore policy making methods to assist you in your day to day work.

In the first day afternoon you will get to explore various methods in greater depth. The second day will start with a group exercise where you will apply the method to a policy question of interest and develop your skills and understanding in an interactive manner. In the final afternoon session, we will turn to the vexed issue of how to find the right method to apply to the right policy challenge.

  • Learn about a large range of social science methods for gaining evidence

DATA-DRIVEN TAX AND TRANSFER POLICY ANALYSIS USING STINMOD+

Dr Jinjing Li

Policy or economic analyst? Equip yourself with the theoretical and practical knowledge to assess tax and transfer policies in Australia using microsimulation techniques with Dr Jinjing Li, Associate Professor at the National Social and Economic Modelling Centre (NATSEM) at the University of Canberra.

COURSE CONTENT

This Master Class is delivered by members of the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) and has no prior programming skill requirement.

The course will:

  • Introduce the concept of microsimulation
  • Explore the key concepts, components, and the typical use of a microsimulation model
  • Unpack tax and transfer policy analysis and NATSEM’s STINMOD+ model as a practical tool for policy assessment
  • Cover the economic theories behind the STINMOD+
  • Provide hands-on exercises using recent policy changes such as the changes to the childcare subsidy and income tax offset

Participants of this Master Class will also receive complimentary 3-month access to the full STINMOD+ online model.
