The WEST Project

The WEST Project (Women’s Empowerment through Strength Training) is an evidence-based program developed at the University of Canberra to support women’s health, empowerment, and recovery through structured strength training. Established in 2020 by PhD researcher Erin Kelly, the program was created to explore the role of resistance training in trauma recovery and wellbeing, and has since grown into a valued and ongoing community program.

Grounded in research and trauma-informed practice, the WEST Project provides a supportive environment where women can build physical strength, confidence, and social connection. Participants engage in supervised training delivered by qualified female coaches, ensuring safe, inclusive, and trauma-informed practice.

Through a partnership with the SNOW Foundation and university support, the WEST Project continues to create meaningful outcomes by promoting accessible strength training, fostering empowerment and resilience, and contributing to knowledge in women’s health and recovery pathways.

Mission

WEST project is a free evidence based program to empower women through evidence-based strength training that builds physical capability, confidence, and connection. We provide a safe, inclusive, and trauma-informed environment where women can grow stronger both physically and mentally, supported by research, like-minded community, and compassionate practice.

Training approach

Our training approach is based around powerlifting-style movements - squats, deadlifts, and bench press, combined with additional strength and conditioning exercises. You don’t need any prior experience. Our coaches will guide you through technique, form, and confidence-building from day one.

Program structure

This free program runs in 10 week blocks aligned with school terms, with breaks over the holidays. If space becomes available, you may be able to join mid-term. Choose a time that suits you, whether early morning, mid-morning or lunchtime.

How it works

Step 1: Complete the expression of interest form below, including your preferred training time, goals, fitness experience, and any specific needs.

Step 2: If a spot is available, you’ll be offered a place in the next program block. If the program is full, you’ll be added to our waiting list and notified when a place becomes available.

Success stories

Tuesday and Thursday became my favourite day of the week because I come out of that feeling just really physically strong, just lifted something heavy, and I'm like, woohoo. I'm tracking my little progress on my chart but also I feel like I can do anything. If I can figure this out, I can figure out other things

I can really see the linkage now in physical strength to mental strength as well, and resilience and how it makes you feel really good about yourself and that you're achieving something. And you do feel proud of your accomplishments from week to week, and you look through your little booklet and think, "Oh wow, look where I started." And yeah, I think that it's definitely had an impact in terms of my healing and just where I can take it as well. I'm just excited to keep going with it.

I just walked out feeling very different. I felt confident, and just the way I was able to get through a very stressful week. It was the same week my divorce came through, signed. It was a huge week, and I don’t think I could have gotten through that week. It’s like I’m strong, do you know what I mean? I’m stronger than I remember being
