About the course

Contexts for Heritage Engineering is a professional development course co-designed by Engineering Heritage Australia and the University of Canberra.

The course consists of introductory online learning followed by an on-site workshop in Newcastle 23-24 July 2026. Completion of the two optional assignments will enable you to get feedback from professionals working in heritage engineering. The course includes teachers from backgrounds in structural, civil and mechanical engineering, and materials conservation, with a focus on local expertise. As well as engineers, course participants typically include a variety of heritage-related professionals. This enables you to develop professional and local networks to kick-start your career.

This course is taught by Experienced Heritage Engineers from Newcastle and New South Wales and Heritage conservation staff from the University of Canberra.

Certification

A Certificate of Participation will be awarded on completion.

This course can be paired with Materials for Heritage Engineering (Next delivery dates: Brisbane - November 2026 and Adelaide - November 2027).

Successful completion of Contexts for Heritage Engineering and Materials for Heritage Engineering will assist qualified engineers to be eligible for accreditation as Heritage Engineers and listed in the EA National Engineering Register in Heritage and Conservation Engineering.

Learn from industry experts

Ms Natalie Ison

Natalie is a PhD candidate at the University of Canberra, with her research focusing on fossil fuel usage in operating heritage machinery. Natalie holds bachelor’s degrees in fine arts from the University of Newcastle and Cultural Heritage Conservation with First Class Honours from the University of Canberra.

Natalie's professional experience includes roles in public sector cultural institutions in objects conservation, registration and as a heritage officer. Natalie also works as a conservator in the private sector. She is passionate about the heritage sector, loves working in multidisciplinary teams and participating in conversations around heritage and significance.
