Title
Covering COVID-19: How Australian media reported the coronavirus pandemic in 2020
Summary
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 not only presented a major health, social and economic crisis, but also represented a news event that dominated media coverage on an unprecedented scale. This launch presents the findings of ‘Covering COVID: How Australian media reported the coronavirus pandemic in 2020’, a report that provides a comprehensive overview of the nature of Australian news coverage in 2020 through a large-scale content analysis of over 9 million news items and around 2.5 million unique items (excluding syndications) published across print, broadcast and online media. Findings provide a broad picture of how Australian news organisations reported the COVID-19 story, as well as presenting a picture of how COVID-19 coverage developed and changed over the course of the year.
