The Canberra Law School Presents The Hon. Michael Kirby

Visiting the Vatican to get the Catholic Church to support Decriminalisation of gay crimes: A delicate Mission

The Honourable Michael Kirby was a Justice of the High Court of Australia (1996-2009). Since concluding his long judicial service, he has been engaged in many tasks for the United Nations and international bodies. At present he is Co-Chair of the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute. That body organised for him to visit the Vatican in Rome on 5 April 2019. The invitation came from Pope Francis and involved a dialogue with Cardinal Secretary of State of the Holy See (Cardinal Parolin). The aim is to secure reconsideration of the Catholic Church’s stance on gay rights and the criminalisation of gay people. The dialogue is continuing, and it will be described
