Grammar Learning and Language Learning: How Simple Techniques Can Help Us Learn Grammar

This Masterclass presents some simple techniques to show how we can teach people who know nothing about how the English language works understand the basic parts of a sentence. It discusses similarities between learning grammar and learning a language (your first language or another language). For example, before we can learn a language, we need to notice things. In this Masterclass we undertake a few simple exercises in English to show how you can train yourself to notice language in a way that helps you to learn grammar. We will also discuss useful strategies from language learning that are helpful in learning grammar (e.g. the importance of taking risks in order to gain confidence). The Masterclass will focus on examples from the world around us (including children’s story books, government messages, and songs) to show that grammar isn’t something that exists in grammar books but is something all around us.
