First Nations Speaking Competition: Implementing a Voice to Parliament

We are very excited to announce our first ever First Nations Speaking Competition: Implementing a Voice to Parliament, hosted by Chief Justice Lucy McCallum of the ACT Supreme Court.

A unique style of competition, the First Nations Speaking Competition involves two teams drafting and presenting submissions to a mock Senate Committee Inquiry on a model for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament.

Teams will be provided with a proposed model for a Voice on which to base their submissions, with written submissions due one week prior to the competition. On the evening of the competition, teams will present to a panel of judges before responding to questions from the bench.

Teams will be composed of at least one student from UC and at least one from ANU. Students should apply as individuals, and competition organisers will form teams with students from both institutions. While all students are welcome to apply, Indigenous students will be given priority in team selection.

The Competition will be held on Thursday 29 September at 6pm at the ACT Supreme Court.
