David Muniz is a high ranking official at the US Embassy and a skilled diplomat. He is visiting UC to converse about the Australia-US relationship and the war in Ukraine.

David Muniz

Political Counsellor, US Embassy, Canberra

David Muniz has served more than 20 years in the State Department.

In his most recent assignment, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Bucharest, Romania, and serving as Charge D’Affaires for two years. 

Prior to arriving in Bucharest, from 2018 until June of 2020, he was Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Regional and Multilateral Affairs in the Bureau of Counterterrorism, where he also served as Director of the Office of Regional Affairs for South/Central Asia and the Near East.

Previously, he was the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Tirana, Albania from July 2015 until August 2018.

Other past assignments include service as Deputy Director for the Office of Nordic and Baltic Affairs in the Bureau for European and Eurasian Affairs, Deputy Principal Officer and Head of Political Section at the U.S. Consulate in Kirkuk, Iraq, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission and Head of Political-Economic Section at the U.S. Embassy in Podgorica, Montenegro, and Political Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Pristina, Kosovo, along with assignments in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Mr. Muniz has studied Albanian, Serbo-Croatian, and Russian.

Mr. Muniz is a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law and a rabid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs.  He also holds an undergraduate degree in History and Political Science from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

He is the recipient of numerous State Department awards, including several Superior Honor Awards and Meritorious Honor Awards.  He was awarded the National Order of Faithful Service medal by Romanian President Klaus W. Iohannis in May 2023.
