Professorial Lecture - Professor Michael Roche

So, just what is it that mental health nurses do?

A central aspect of national strategies and plans for mental health service provision is the requirement to expand and sustain a skilled mental health nursing workforce. One challenge to recruitment is describing and communicating nursing practice and its impact. This presentation will attempt to provide clarity by exploring the recent history of mental health nursing in Australia with examples of innovative practice. Research that highlights practice transformation demonstrates what is possible and provides a foundation on which to build and extend the discipline. Lessons from other practice domains will be examined for their lessons for mental health nursing, and potential directions discussed
