University is a great place for reading and learning! How about putting aside some time for learning about Jesus? Reading about Jesus is an opportunity to join with others and read through the Bible’s accounts of Jesus, to discuss and learn together. Sometimes it is hard to meet new people, or to find opportunities to practise speaking in English. We wanted to provide a chance to help you with this. Our English Conversation Club is an informal time, not a structured class. In a small group, we talk about a different topic each meeting, with a native English speaker. Improve your English by practising your speaking and listening, and make some new friends along the way! It examines the challenges of writing about Israel, Gaza and the West Bank after October 7 for readers in a deeply polarised Australia.My book Raven Mother traces the many ways war, persecution and dispossession shaped my German Jewish family across twentieth- and twenty-first-century Germany, British Mandate Palestine, Israel and Australia. After October 7’s terror attack by Hamas and the catastrophic violence that followed in Gaza, I was faced with the question ‘What is the responsibility of a memoirist when private family history becomes entangled with public history that is still unfolding?’ I felt compelled to bring two painful and contested histories into dialogue—not to equate them, but to resist erasure and acknowledge the suffering embedded in both.While many readers have welcomed the final approach which I took in Raven Mother, responses within the Australian Jewish-identified community have ranged from engaged disagreement to silence, and I’ve lost long-held friendships.This paper reflects on these responses and silences and considers what responsibilities writers bear when personal history enters contested political terrain.All are welcome!BioJane Messer is a Visiting Fellow, Centre for Creative and Cultural Research and former Associate Professor and Director of Creative Writing, Macquarie University. In 2026, Nationals Snow will be held at Mt. UCLifex and Surf Life Saving NSW are bringing a First Aid course straight to you on campus to make it as simple as possible for you to get certified! There are 3 course options, please see the details of each below to choose which course you'd like to do. Please note, HLTAID011 includes HLTAID009, and HLTAID012 includes both HLTAID011 & HLTAID009. All three courses are run together, those only completing the CPR component (HLTAID009) will finish in the morning, those completing HLTAID011 will finish around 4:30pm and those completing HLTAID012 will complete 30 additional minutes, finishing around 5pm. Sydney punk rockers Dear Seattle are hitting the road this August, announcing an extensive regional Australian headline tour with very special guests Seahaven (US) who will be making their debut visit to our shores.
