Students will continue to contextualise their applied practice and increase their skill base in relation to critical analysis and evaluation through the articulation of critical self-appraisal. Through external engagement, students are given the opportunity to consolidate their understanding of the fashion industry. Through a research approach, students respond to live or simulated industry-set challenges. Knowledge and professional understanding of the processes underpinning product design and development will be enhanced. Students will combine creative, practical, intellectual and entrepreneurial skills within an industrial context to respond to a brief.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Develop an experimental approach in order to realise design concepts throughout the industry product development cycle;

2. Select, synthesise and communicate appropriate information for the development of fashion products; and
3. Select and apply appropriate technologies for pattern and garment construction in relation to differing textiles materials.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

Extensions

Students can apply for an extension to the submission due date for an assessment item through extenuating, evidenced circumstances (specific details are found through the Assessment Policy and Procedures. Section 9.12). Extensions must be applied for before the due date. Documentary evidence (e.g. medical certificate) will be expected for an extension to be granted, however this will not guarantee that the application will be successful. The Unit Convener or relevant Discipline Convener will decide whether to grant an extension and the length of the extension.

Special assessment requirements

In order to pass this unit, students have to obtain at least 50% of the available marks and attempt all assessment pieces.

 

Students who are unable to submit an assignment within a week of the due date, for medical reasons, will be required to submit assignment on a negotiated due date. 

 

No assignments will be accepted for marking after the solution or marked assignments have been returned to the class.

Academic integrity

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Participation requirements

It is expected students attend all lectures and tutorials as per timetable in order to benefit from formative feedback on design development. However, is a student is unable to attend due to prolonged illness; a medical certificate may be presented for consideration.

Students who attend campus for class or other purposes must play their part in keeping our campus and community safe by following these basic guidelines to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission:
  • Practise good hand hygiene, washing hands regularly;
  • If you do happen to cough or sneeze, please do so into the crook of your elbow, dispose of tissues immediately and wash hands immediately
  • Practise effective physical distancing;
  • Follow all directions of teaching and other UC staff regarding safety measures;
  • Stay off campus if you are unwell and get tested according to Queensland Government guidelines, and

Required IT skills

Access to a personal laptop would benefit the students during lectures and tutorials. In particular, software requirements are Word, and Adobe Creative Suite with a minimum of Illustrator, In-design and Photoshop available. Computer Labs will be scheduled out of class time for those students who don't have access to a personal computer.

Special consideration

Applications for an extension to the due date for submission of an assessment item on the grounds of illness or other unavoidable and verifiable personal circumstances (that is, special consideration) should be submitted via email to the unit convener. Each application for an extension has to be supported by appropriate documentation. For advice on documentary evidence to support applications for extensions, please refer to the Assessment Guide that supports the Assessment Procedures.

"Students should apply for extensions before the due submission date, and are advised to do so as early as possible. Applications after the due submission date may be considered only in exceptional circumstances" (3.14 Assessment Procedures).

Penalties for late submission or non-completion of mandatory assessment

This section only refers to students who have not been granted an extension (see above).      

Students who do not submit assignments on time will be penalized 5% (or some other figure – academic's choice) of the marks of the assignment per day or part day. Students who do not submit an assignment within 7 days of the deadline will be given a mark of 0 for the item.
