This unit will provide students with the fundamental concepts of toxicology as they relate to specific organ and tissue systems. The unit covers metabolic processes, toxicokinetics, carcinogenesis and tissue-specific toxic responses.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Develop a knowledge and understanding of the principles and mechanisms of toxicology. They will learn about the type of toxic processes that affect different tissues and systems throughout the body.

Special assessment requirements

The final mark for this subject will be calculated by an accumulation of marks from each assessment item (as outlines in the assessment strategy). An aggregate mark of 50% or more is required to pass this unit.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Learner engagement

The 150 hours associated with this unit should be distributed over the trimester teaching period, which is either 12 or 15 weeks; therefore you should be spending on average 10 – 12.5 hours a week on this unit. This time would be used to complete the unit activities (such as module based reading), assessments (such assignments and/or quizzes) as well as reading and participating in online discussion boards.

Participation requirements
