Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:1. Analyse and describe normal and disordered swallowing across the lifespan;
2. Critically evaluate and interpret the associated etiological factors related to swallowing disorders;
3. Select and describe appropriate swallowing and mealtime assessments for individuals across the lifespan;
4. Analyse and interpret assessment results, and identify referral requirements; and
5. Critically apply evidence-based practice and ICF principles in planning and implementing assessment and intervention for individuals with swallowing disorders across the lifespan.

Moderation: Assessments will be moderated in accordance with the Faculty of Health Moderation Guidelines before they are returned to the students.
Special assessment requirements
To pass this unit students must obtain an overall mark of 50% for the unit and have passed the case study assessment.
If you do not pass the case study assessment you will have one opportunity to resubmit the assessment
If you fail the resubmission you will be required to repeat the unit when next offered
Supplementary assessment
Students are not entitled to a supplementary assessment for any of the assignments in this unit.

Learner engagement
This unit involves pre-recorded lectures as well as real-time tutorials/workshops. The content of the lectures and the tutorials will NOT overlap. Students are strongly advised to have engaged with the pre-recorded lectures and any pre-reading or pre-workshop learning tasks before attending the weekly workshop.
Participation requirements
Students are required to attend a 3 day intensive Tuesday 09/06/2026 to Thursday 11/06/2026 (see timebtale of activities)
Students are expected to attend at least 80% of the workshops for this unit, weeks 2 to 7, either in person or online .
Required IT skills
This unit involves online meetings in real time using the Blackboard Collaborate tool. Blackboard Collaborate provides a virtual classroom or meeting room where you can communicate in real time with your lecturer and other students.
