Sean King
UC graduate now Director of innovative legal practice

BACHELOR OF LAW, 2005, BACHELOR OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING, 2003

In only a few short years, Sean King has gone from a graduate law position with a nationally based firm, to Director of Proximity Legal, an innovative new legal practice he established in Canberra with co-owner James Dunn.

After earning both his Bachelor of Computer Engineering and Bachelor of Law from UC, Sean used his unique combination of qualifications to develop his career by working as a lawyer with Phillips Fox, and later DLA Piper, assisting various Australian Government clients in the areas of Contracting, Intellectual Property and Information Technology.

It was this professional experience, working on a number of the Australian Government's most high-value and high-profile projects that led Sean to co-found Proximity Legal, giving him a chance to introduce something new and innovative to the world of law.
Proximity Legal is improving the provision of legal services within the Australian government sector by providing organisations high quality lawyers to work as part of their in-house legal, commercial or procurement teams under an innovative low overhead secondment model. Through its unique secondment model, the practice provides a more cost-effective way to procure legal advice and services for major projects and initiatives.

Despite his hard working and determined attitude, Sean acknowledges the importance of a maintaining a healthy work-life balance. From his time at UC, he fondly remembers being involved with the university's clubs and societies. He was actively involved in the UC Outdoors Club from 2000 to 2005 (including a period as President), and enjoyed the opportunities it provided in meeting and socialising with new people from different backgrounds. He also remembers the camaraderie and easy-going campus lifestyle, saying he misses the time and space to get really immersed in a topic. His advice to students is that "There's a lot more to learning than just the textbooks".

Together with his wife and fellow UC graduate, Kimberlee King, Sean is also the Director of Earlybird Events. Earlybird Events is a marketing and events management company also based in Canberra. Earlybird Events has been responsible for management of the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, Prime Minister's XI Cricket Match and marketing of the Australia Day LIVE concerts and other notable public entertainment and cultural events in the region.
