UC Indigenous Australian HDR Stipend Scholarship
The Indigenous Australian Higher Degree by Research Stipend Scholarship supports engaged and ambitious indigenous applicants to undertake a PhD or Master by Research course.
How to Apply?
Apply through the HDR Application Portal.
Funding and duration
$35,000 per annum (tax-free) stipend up to four years for a doctoral course and two years for a masters course.
$10,000 of research funding is available to be used for any cost related to the project.
Eligibility
- enrolled, or seeking to enrol, as a full-time candidate in a Higher Degree by Research course at the University of Canberra;
- meet the requirements for admission; and
- identify as an Indigenous Australian.

W J Weeden Postgraduate Research Scholarship
This Scholarship is generously funded by the family of the late W J Weeden.
How to Apply?

Funding
- $30,000 per annum (2023 rate, tax-free) stipend to assist with living costs, indexed annually.
- reimbursement of relocation costs within six months of commencement (new candidates only). Further details in the Conditions of Award.
- International candidates will also be awarded an RTP Fee Offset scholarship to cover tuition fees.

- 3.5 years

- completed a Bachelor degree with First Class Honours, or be regarded by the University as having an equivalent level of attainment
- be enrolled, or seeking to enrol, as a full-time candidate in a Doctor of Philosophy course at the University

Australian Research Training Program Fees Offset Scholarship
Eligibility
- domestic student (Australian citizen or permanent resident, New Zealand citizen)
- applying for or currently undertaking a Higher Degree by Research course (PhD, Professional Doctorate, Masters by Research).
- A RTP Fees Offset Scholarship may be offered to international HDR candidates whose application for an RTP, University-funded or W J Weedon stipend scholarship has been assessed as competitive by the University Research Scholarship Committee.
How to Apply?
- No application required for domestic candidates.
- International RTP, University-funded or W J Weedon stipend scholarship recipients may be awarded a RTP Fee Offset Scholarship. No application required.

UC CIRI Scholarship Program
Established in 2016 by UC CIRI, this scholarship program has been set up to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying at UC who are pursuing a course of study beyond a Bachelor Degree.

Deliberative Democracy PhD Scholarship
The Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance is a world-leading institution for scholarly and applied research in deliberative governance. Centre staff and students examine how deliberation – inclusive, reasonable, and reflective communication – can empower people to shape political decisions that affect their lives.
The Deliberative Democracy PhD scholarship is designed for a student to research any topic related to the Centre’s work. Interested applicants should consult the Centre’s website for a sense of the kinds of research undertaken in the Centre, and whether their project might fit: https://www.canberra.edu.au/research/centres/cddgg
Potential primary supervisors are Dr Hans Asenbaum, Prof John Dryzek and Prof Simon Niemeyer. The research topic of PhD projects will fall broadly within the field of deliberative democracy. Possible topics include, but are not limited to democratic transformation, environmental politics, global governance, political communication, identity, inclusion, digital politics, democracy in crisis, deliberative reasoning, deliberative systems, democratic innovations, gender, feminist research, social movements, and participatory research methods. Projects in democratic theory and/or using qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods, as well as multidisciplinary projects are welcome.

2023 University of Canberra Health Research Institute PhD Scholarships (Indigenous Tobacco Control)
This scholarship opportunity aims to the health leaders of the future. Students will use research to answer ‘real world’ questions and issues that have impact on practice and policy related to Indigenous tobacco control in Australia.
University of Canberra Health Research Institute (UC HRI)
UC HRI was established in 2015 to consolidate and showcase the University's health research strengths, building sufficient scale, scope, sustainability, and infrastructure necessary to support world-class research. We actively encourage and support interdisciplinary, multi-disciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches in addressing 'real world' issues. Excellence in research is at the core of our vision. Our research informs government policy and professional practice to improve individual and community health outcomes and the healthcare system.
The successful candidate will be enrolled into our flagship PhD Plus programme and be integrated into high performing academic teams in a world class research environment.
PhD candidates will be awarded a scholarship stipend of $30,000 per annum (and indexed), comprising a tax-free living allowance for 3 years.
Research areas
The successful candidates will be supervised by Dr Penney Upton and Dr Sunil George, who provide technical support to the National Best Practice Unit Tackling Indigenous Smoking (NBPU TIS). NBPU TIS is a consortium led by Ninti One, an Indigenous owned not for profit organisation. Consortium members include UC-HRI and the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet based at Edith Cowan University. Funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, NBPU TIS is one element of the successful Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) program. This scholarship will provide opportunities to link into the consortium and the TIS program and to learn from key stakeholders and experts in Indigenous tobacco control. We would be particular interested in research proposals in the following areas:
- Preventing smoking and vaping uptake in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth;
- Social marketing campaigns to increase awareness and uptake of Quit support in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities;
- Using social media for tobacco control;
- Tobacco control in remote and very remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities;
- Supporting smokefree environments (at home, car or workplace).

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:
- meet the University of Canberra’s admission requirements;
- meet residency requirements;
- not be currently enrolled in a PhD program at another university at the time of application;
- apply as a full-time candidate;
- have obtained the equivalent of a Master’s degree by research or 1st Class honours degree in a related subject to the research area(s) above
- Be available to start in February 2023 (Semester 1)
Successful candidates can be located on the UC campus in Bruce, or in Darwin NT.

N&MRC Stipend Scholarship
The N&MRC invites applications from outstanding candidates to undertake a PhD funded by an N&MRC PhD Stipend Scholarship.
The PhD candidate will be supervised by the Centre’s academic leaders in the field of Communication and Media Studies, on a topic related to one of its three research Labs:
- Digital News+ Lab. The home of the Digital News Report: Australia, DN+L researches the changing nature of the news and media industries in the digital environment. Potential research projects include:
- Journalism in the digital age
- News consumption in regions, generations and social groups
- Digital media policy and regulations
- Digital platforms
- Critical Conversations Lab investigates the way issues of social and political concern emerge through media and digital networks to enable public participation and influence political agendas. Projects might include:
- Royal Commissions as ‘critical conversations’
- Public discourse and networks (e.g. climate change, ageing, or work)
- Media and social policy
- Political and government communication
- The Media Cultures Lab examines the impact of digital media technologies on social behaviour and social change, particularly in our daily lives. Projects include:
- Media discourse of active transport policy
- Parents and technology
- Cyber safety
- Generations and technology
The N&MRC provides a stimulating and supportive research training environment, where Higher Degree by Research candidates work with experienced researchers and participate in seminars, workshops and masterclasses.
Applications for this PhD Scholarship are invited from competitive applicants with excellent academic track records, and relevant professional experience. The N&MRC Stipend will be paid at the full RTP Scholarship rate of $28,597 (2021 rate), plus $4,000 Faculty of Arts and Design infrastructure support.
Interested candidates should prepare an Application incorporating:
- Covering letter of no more than two pages addressed to Professor Kerry McCallum, Director, News and Media Research Centre.
- Curriculum Vitae. This should include academic qualifications and professional experience.
- Research Proposal of up to 1000 words should include: Title, aims and purpose of the proposed research; reference to key academic literature; understanding of the topic and its professional context; proposed research design and methods; and potential outcomes of the study. **Candidates are strongly advised to identify potential supervisors and contact them, or the N&MRC Director, Kerry McCallum to discuss their proposed topic.

CSIRO Industry PhD scholarship program
CSIRO's Industry PhD (iPhD) Program brings together an industry partner, a university and Australia’s leading science agency, CSIRO, to co-develop a four-year industry-focused PhD project. It provides PhD students with a unique skill set to focus on impact driven research.
How to Apply?
The program has yearly intakes with most projects planned to commence in February/March. Project opportunities, including how to apply, will be advertised on the CSIRO Students and Scholarships webpage as they become available.

- For students who do not hold another scholarship, a stipend of $1,000 per fortnight for six fortnights ($6,000 in total), tax free.

Eligibility
- Students must be enrolled full time in a research degree (Masters or PhD) at an Australian or New Zealand university.
- Part-time students are eligible to apply for the scholarship only in circumstances where the applicant is able to demonstrate heavy carer commitments or a medical condition that precludes them from studying full time.

Fullbright Postgraduate Scholarships
Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarships allow postgraduate students undertaking their Australian PhD to conduct research in the U.S. OR supports postgraduate students not currently enrolled in a degree program to undertake a U.S. postgraduate program such as a master’s or PhD or conduct a period of research towards their Australian PhD.

The NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarships support successful applicants to attain a research based postgraduate degree – Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or a Research Masters Degree.
