Student Research Retreat (12-14 Oct 2018)
Interested in Research? This was an opportunity not to be missed!!
The Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership and Strategy and UC CIRI ran a weekend Research Retreat for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students and non-Indigenous students who were working, or wish to work, in research in the Indigenous space.
Only those students undertaking a postgraduate degree were eligible to apply.
This retreat brought together a small group of people for a collective assault on the barriers to productive writing. Connecting the experienced with the less experienced allows a sharing of approaches to and views on what makes a good publication and how to bring it about, and the distinctive characteristics of researching in the Indigenous space.
Aims and Expectations
The aim of this retreat was to beat writer's block and accelerate individual throughput, to increase the quality of final manuscripts submitted for publication, and so to ensure that a greater quantity of the quality research that we do sees the light of day. The skills and understanding developed during this retreat will pay back the effort many times over when it comes to preparing manuscripts and conducting research in the future.
Having the opportunity to yarn with researchers highly experienced in working in the Indigenous space provided participants with clearer ideas and better methodologies for working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The expectation was that all participants left the retreat with the tools and understanding to undertake and write about research in the Indigenous space.
All participants were required to actively participate in all activities.
Facilitated by Professor Peter Radoll, this was an amazing weekend where participants had the unique opportunity to interact and gain advice and guidance from world-renowned researchers.
