Hai Jo Ching, Sheperdess
Artist and Work of Art
This rather pleasant image of a smiling sheperdess and a long-horned goat is one of twenty pictures gifted to the University of Canberra (Canberra College of Advanced Education as it was then known) in 1981 by the East Asian Art Society. The work by Hai Jo-Ch'ing, shows traditional Chinese brushwork with watercolours and ink. Like similar pictures, the image is accompanied by caligraphy and the red box stamp of the maker and owner. It is an image that can be used to compare against typical western-art scenes and pasteral themes. Are we judging non-western art through western art value?
