Biography:

Cecily Gibson initially studied nursing in Young and later moved to Sydney to undertake specialist training at the Royal Hospital for Women in Paddington.

Whilst still working as a nurse, Gibson enrolled in part-time ceramic classes at the Canberra Technical College, which remained a hobby until a chance meeting with the wife of a diplomat at an event, introduced her to Japanese pottery.

Enthused by this newfound knowledge, Gibson travelled to Japan and spent four years (1959 – 1964) studying in Mashiko, Tokyo and Kyoto, and was ‘honoured’ with an exhibition of her work at the prestigious Mitsukoshi Gallery in Tokyo.  She followed up this successful trip with further international travel and research, after being awarded a Churchhill Fellowship in 1967.
