Anne Swan Gwannas Going Home

The  Artist and Work of Art

Gwannas going home

Gwannas going home  by Ann Swan is a fascinating work of art.  Colourful and highly decorative, it combines the indigenous symbol  of a circle which is associated with meeting places and the totemic emblem  of the  goanna (gwannu).  The painting depicts the Kamilaroi people from the Northern NSW town of Moree  who are afflilated with the Goanna coming together for the Aboriginal Football Knockout hosted by the local team. The Koori Knockout  was eventually won in 1997 by the Nambucca Valley Rams.  It was seen as a contemporary corroboree with an emphasis on traditional culture  by the artist.

Ann Swan painted the work  in 1997 using acrylic paint onto canvas.
