As we are seeing all too clearly with the cost-of-living crisis, financial hardship can be severe and unexpected.
The Student Empowerment Fund was introduced in 2020 for students who unexpectedly found themselves without a job, and experiencing sudden financial hardship due to the impact of COVID-19. It consists of a one-off bursary to contribute towards immediate, short-term needs including basic living and medical costs.
As rent prices, fuel prices and grocery prices continue to rise to new extremes, UC is handling a sudden increase in student calls for help as the cost of living is at an all-time high.
