Changing Lives one degree at a time, your support can drive change and empower students on their journey to a brighter future.

"Thank you so much for changing mine and my family’s life, I am so very grateful!"

For students like Ellie Tomlinson, a life at university is not easy. COVID-19’s lasting effects has left Ellie’s father with reduced working hours, and the family struggling to support her mother’s chemotherapy costs. With her family struggling, Ellie had hardly the time to focus on her own needs.

Diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis at the age of 5, the added cost of medication and the chronic pain she dealt with daily, was yet another barrier that she faced on the road to achieving her goals.

Without the financial support that most students so readily rely on, she found herself exhausted and defeated, with dreams of attending university and completing her physiotherapy degree seeming impossible.

At the University of Canberra (UC) we are the number one university in the world for reducing inequalities, and we believe that everyone, regardless of their circumstances has the right to an education.

28% of UC’s cohort are the first to attend university in their family, just like Ellie. And with the help of a UC Foundation Scholarship Ellie was able to transform her life, the financial burden was lifted from her shoulders and she was one step closer to achieving her dreams.

However, the need continues. In 2021, 139 eligible applicants applied for a UC Foundation Scholarship, but due to funding, only 17 could be awarded.

"I’m the first person in my family to come to university. Years ago, I wouldn’t have ever thought it was possible!

Many students are facing immeasurable hardship. The Student Empowerment Fund provides students with immediate financial support when they need it most. Since the launch of this fund in 2020, we have been able to supply financial support to over 290 students when they had nowhere else to turn.

Your support to UC students in need, through the UC Foundation, has the power to transform lives. And over the next year your gift will supply them with the resources and services that they need to fulfil their dreams and achieve their goals.

Please give a tax-deductible donation to our students in need by June 30. You have the power to change lives.
