Online offer for overseas international students
Continue your studies from home
UC recognises how important it is that you are able to continue with your studies while your travel plans are temporarily on hold due to COVID-19. For this reason, we have developed a carefully selected range of online units for our most popular courses, enabling you to commence your studies online before transitioning to face-to-face study once international travel restrictions are lifted.
We've put together a list of our most frequently asked questions from international students looking to start or continue their studies.
Explore our frequently asked questions
What is the 10 per cent off total tuition offer?
UC will apply a 10 per cent 'offshore international study' discount to study undertaken by eligible international students located outside of Australia. This discount will be effective until the Australian international border re-opens.
Am I eligible for the discount?
You may be eligible for the 10 per cent ‘offshore international study’ discount if you meet the following criteria:
- classified as an ‘international student’.
- located outside of Australia at the census date for your intended study period (Semester 2, 2021 and onwards).
- enrolled in units that would normally be delivered at one of UC’s Australian campuses.
- not currently be receiving any other study discount or special arrangement in addition to a UC international scholarship.
I am an existing UC student, will the discount also apply to me?
Yes, the 10 per cent ‘offshore international study’ discount will apply to both new and existing UC students that meet the eligibility criteria.
Are prospective and current international UC College students eligible for the discount?
Please contact the College directly at firstname.lastname@example.org to find out more.
How will the discount be applied?
The University will automatically apply the 10 per cent ‘offshore international study’ discount to students that are recorded as being located outside of Australia and meet the eligibility criteria. We will directly email these students by Week Five of the semester to confirm that the discount has been applied.
If you believe that you are eligible for the discount but do not receive this confirmation, please email us at email@example.com.
How long will the discount remain valid?
The 10 per cent ‘offshore international study’ discount is a temporary measure which will apply while the Australian international border remains closed. The discount will no longer apply once travel to Australia is possible.
Will the discount affect my current scholarship?
No. Your scholarship will remain in place and the ‘offshore international study’ discount will further reduce the tuition fee that you are required to pay.
For example, if you have a 10 per cent international merit scholarship this, combined with the 10 per cent ‘offshore international study’ discount, will result in a total fee reduction of 20 per cent.
Which degrees are offered online?
UC is offering some of our most popular degrees to commencing students which can be found on our online learning page.
How many subjects can I study online?
Each available degree will have at least two units available online for study. In some degrees you may have the option to study up to four units, should you choose to do so.
What can I do if my course isn’t included in the list of available online offerings?
In some cases, you may be able to commence your course by studying units remotely. Please contact us for further information.
Do I need a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) to study online?
When you accept your offer, UC will issue you with a CoE which you can use to apply for a student visa. While you do not need a student visa to study online, there may be implications towards your future eligibility for a Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) if you do not hold a student visa when commencing your online study. For more information visit the Department of Home Affairs website.
Will my online study count towards eligibility for post study work through a Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485)?
The Department of Home Affairs announced changes for the Subclass 485 visa to cater for the impact of COVID-19. This includes counting online study undertaken outside Australia towards the Australian Study Requirement for existing and new student visa holders.
I don’t have my final results. Can I still accept my offer?
Yes. You may accept your offer and enrol in online study before you receive your final results. However, your final results must be submitted to us by 23 August 2021. If you do not have your final results by then OR your results do not meet the entry requirements for your chosen course, you will be required to withdraw your enrolment for Semester 2, 2021 and defer your studies to the next available intake or seek entry to an alternate course, including a pathway.

More information on English language requirements and tests or qualifications we recognise for the purposes of meeting English requirements can be found on the English language tests recognised by UC page. This includes information about any tests that the University recognises for those impacted by the closure of English testing centres in response to COVID-19.
The University’s English language requirements are separate to the Department of Home Affairs’ English language requirements for visa purposes. If you opt to meet UC’s English requirements by a means not recognised by DHA, you may be required to undertake a DHA approved test to show evidence of your English proficiency when you apply for a student visa.
I have accepted my offer but would like to defer until the Australian border reopens. What happens to my deposit/fees?
If you decide to defer your offer, the deposit amount will remain in your account to be applied to your future studies at UC.
I had previously accepted an offer but had to defer as I still can’t travel to Australia. What are my options?
You may be able to commence your studies online. If your course is not available online or you do not wish to proceed with the online option, you are able to request another deferral or alternatively you may seek a refund for any fees paid.
How much is the acceptance fee (deposit) that I must pay in order to accept my offer?
The total acceptance fee that you need to pay will be outlined in your offer letter. In general, this fee is the equivalent of your first semester fees.
Can I get a tuition fee refund if my student visa for Australia is refused?
Yes. If your student visa for Australia is refused, UC will provide you with a full refund of your tuition fees (up to a maximum of four units) if you meet the following criteria:
- You hold a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for University of Canberra
- You are a new commencing student in Semester 2, 2020, Semester 1, 2021 or Semester 2, 2021, undertaking study offshore via remote delivery (online) at UC while the Australian border remains closed (note: UC College courses are not eligible for this arrangement).
- After commencing your online course, you apply for and are refused an Australia student visa to study at UC.
- The visa is refused after the census date (i.e., the last date to withdraw from the enrolled units with no fee implications). If the visa is refused prior to census date and you choose to continue study online from offshore, then you may not be eligible for a refund.
- You provide us with a copy of your visa refusal decision to UC within three months of the refusal decision and have not subsequently been granted another Australian student visa.
- The reason for visa refusal is not related to fraud and there is no evidence of deliberate sabotage. Deliberate sabotage includes failure to provide required documents with the visa application, not responding to document requests from the Department of Home Affairs or otherwise acts of bad faith during the visa application process.
Can I get a refund if I accept an offer while offshore and later decide not to proceed?
Yes. UC has put in place a ‘no risk acceptance’ process where we will offer you a full refund of your deposit paid, provided that:
- you have not obtained a student visa and travelled to Australia
- you withdraw from any study at UC you are enrolled in prior to the census date.
Can I get a refund if I commence study online but withdraw prior to census date?
Yes. If you choose to withdraw prior to census you will be able to apply for a refund.
