UC coursework English proficiency requirements

All applicants wishing to undertake undergraduate or postgraduate coursework study at the University of Canberra must meet the English proficiency requirements for that particular course. The full details of English Proficiency Requirements are listed below.

Note: The University of Canberra will be introducing revised English proficiency requirements as of 6th August 2018.

1.1This schedule outlines the English proficiency requirements for University of Canberra (UC) postgraduate and undergraduate coursework courses, including University of Canberra College (UCC) courses.
1.2All applicants wishing to undertake undergraduate or postgraduate coursework study (including study such as cross institutional and study as a Study Abroad and Exchange student) at the University of Canberra must meet the English proficiency requirements for that particular course.  In exceptional circumstances, the achievement of English language proficiency may also be reviewed by the Director of Student Administration and Planning (or nominated staff member) and deemed as acceptable on a case-by-case basis. Any other exemptions or exceptions are otherwise specified within this schedule.
1.3Undergraduate coursework courses and honours courses with "standard" English proficiency requirements require an overall IELTS (or equivalent) of 6.0 with no band score below 5.5.  Postgraduate coursework courses (i.e. graduate certificate, graduate diploma, Masters) with "standard" English proficiency requirements require an overall IELTS (or equivalent) of 6.0 with no band score below 6.0.
1.4 Coursework (undergraduate and postgraduate) and honours courses with higher (i.e. non-standard) English proficiency requirements are listed below in Section D. Courses that have exceptions from some of the broader means of meeting English proficiency requirements covered in the policy and procedure are also identified in this schedule.
1.5Entry to the following UCC courses require the IELTS (or equivalent) scores outlined below:
    • UCC Diploma (Extended – 3 terms) and International Foundation Studies program: 5.5 overall  (no minimum band scores required);
    • UCC Diploma (2 terms): 6.0 overall (no minimum  band scores required). 
    • UCan Reach, UC Start, UC Prep, and UC Connect:  6.0 overall with no band score below 6.0. 
    • Graduate Certificate in Academic Foundations (GCAF): 6.0  overall with no band score below 6.0.
1.6The University of Canberra requires documentary evidence of the following from applicants as proof of meeting the English language requirements:
    • Previous study that meets the English  proficiency requirements, outlined below in Section A: Meeting English  proficiency requirements through previous study; or
    • The required scores in one of the approved  English Language tests, outlined below in Section B: Meeting English  proficiency requirements through an English Language Test; or
    • Completion of recognised qualification or course  at a recognised institution, as outlined in Section C: Meeting English  proficiency through study at a recognised institution.
16.7 Unless specified as a special arrangement, applicants are regarded as meeting the University's English proficiency requirements for all UC coursework courses (both postgraduate and undergraduate), including those with higher English proficiency requirements, if they have completed one of the following  qualifications, where the medium of instruction was English in one of the countries/territories listed in Table 1:
  • Senior Secondary Study: Successful completion of Year 12 (or equivalent), comparable with the NSW HSC ; or
  • Post-Secondary Study: Successful completion of an equivalent AQF Diploma or Advanced Diploma; or Australian (or equivalent) tertiary preparation course (including Australian university foundation courses), with a full-time equivalence of one year; or
  • Tertiary Study: Successful completion of at least one (1) year of full-time AQF Level 7 (Bachelor) and above.

16.8 Previous study undertaken online or by distance education does not count towards meeting the University's English proficiency requirements.
16.9Transnational Education (TNE): Applicants for one of UC's courses offered overseas can also meet the English proficiency requirements by completing any one of the above-mentioned qualifications from any institution where the medium of instruction and assessment was English and that study required at least two years of full-time equivalent study.
16.10Study Abroad Non-Award short courses: By agreement and with mutual collaboration with partners, students undertaking identified non-award short courses are not required to provide evidence of meeting UC's English proficiency requirements.
16.11Articulated Partners: Applicants from offshore articulation partners who have studied their course entirely in the English medium only (teaching and assessment) for a minimum of two years meet the English language requirements of their chosen course provided there is a current articulation agreement between UC and the partner for that course and that agreement has clauses which have approved the English proficiency of the partner institution and its relevant courses.
16.12 Applicants who do not meet the requirements detailed in Section 1 above may satisfy the University's English proficiency requirements for the courses referred to in the Table below by demonstrating the minimum required test results, in one test sitting, from the following tests:

16.13 To be valid for the purpose of meeting the University's English Proficiency requirements, results from the tests (as per Table 2) must be no more than two years old at the time of seeking admission for the relevant course.
16.14 Where a student has obtained a recognised English Language test result and the test result post-dates any of the applicant's other test results or qualifications referred to in this schedule, the results of the test will supersede any prior English proficiency assessment.
16.15  Unless stated otherwise, the information provided in this section only applies for UC coursework courses up to and including those with standard English proficiency requirements.
16.16 Study at the University of Canberra College English Language Centre (UCCELC) in English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) : Applicants are regarded as meeting the University's English proficiency requirements for courses referred to below if they have completed the following courses and obtained the stated scores:

16.17Courses with higher English proficiency requirements: Students in ELICOS EAP and EAP Plus can be assessed up to courses with entry levels of IELTS 6.5 or 7.0 as follows: UCCELC ELICOS direct-entry pathway programs award results in percentages. Students with higher English language proficiency may be awarded 60%, 65% or 70% range. These results may be used for award courses requiring entry level IELTS 6.0; 6.5; and 7.0.
16.18 UCCELC provides an Offshore Placement Test (OPT) to some offshore agents and to some applicants already onshore to assist in estimating the length of English studies required for its ELICOS courses. The OPT is not an officially recognised English language test for the purposes of meeting the University's English proficiency requirements.
16.19 UCC accepts the Pearson Versant English Placement Test (PVEPT) for entry to its ELICOS, Foundation and Diploma programs as outlined in the table below. The PVEPT is not an officially recognised English language test for the purposes of meeting the University's English proficiency requirements.

1 Under the Department of Immigration and Border Protection’s (DIBP) Simplified Student Visa Framework (effective 1 July 2016), the University will process applications for package offers where the applicant has an IELTS equivalent of no lower than IELTS 4.5.

16.20Study at UCC: Applicants are regarded as meeting the University's English proficiency requirements for UC coursework courses referred to in the table below if they have completed one of the following qualifications:

16.22 Coursework courses with English proficiency requirements higher than the standard English proficiency requirements (as per paragraph 4.3 above) are listed in the table below. Scores indicated are relevant for those applicants electing to use an English proficiency test to meet this requirement.
