Syllabus
This unit will provide students with an overview of the field of public administration, particularly the distinctions that set management of public organisations apart from that of private-sector organisations. Students will begin with an examination of the history and perception of the role of government in the provision of services. Students will then examine the context in which public administrators deliver services to citizens.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Describe the functions of government and the role of public administrators in carrying out those functions;
2. Discuss the history, scope, and environment of public administration;
3. Articulate the basic theories and concepts relevant to the field of public administration; and
4. Explain and identify the importance of ethics and accountability in public organisations.
